Mission Statement and Organization Description

The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City is a community orchestra comprised of musicians, both professional and amateur, who play for the love of music and wish to share it with others in the metropolitan Kansas City area.

The Philharmonia has served the metropolitan Kansas City area and beyond for over fifteen years, playing a wide range of repertoire of orchestral music for many who would otherwise be unable to afford or access such an experience. Our regular season is comprised of three regular concerts plus a family concert.

The orchestra is an educational resource as well as an arts organization that contributes to the quality of life for our patrons. We serve as a training orchestra for young, up-and-coming musicians, allowing them the opportunity to gain valuable experience and benefit from the skills and tutelage of our professional musicians. Our non-professional players - all volunteers - range in age from high school players to retirees. The non-pros contribute an estimated total of 2400 volunteer hours in a year of rehearsals and concerts.

We are supported by a combination of admission proceeds, donations, grants and by Park University, which pays the conductor's salary as well as furnishes use of performing space free of charge for rehearsals and concerts.

The average cost for one concert is $8000. This includes the salaries of the professional musicians for rehearsals and concerts, music rental, and various other costs such as printing of programs and mailings.

The Philharmonia qualifies as a 501 (c)3 organization, and is registered with the Missouri Secretary of State as a non-profit organization.
