Mission "I was delighted to hear the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City perform its New Beginnings Concert! The opening piece, Khachaturian's Sabre Dance from the ballet Gayane, set a wonderful, celebratory mood. The next, Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, was performed by an astounding soloist who was both artistic and technically flawless! The conductor and the soloist coordinated perfectly, resulting in amazing precision and power! After intermission, the Philharmonia did a great job with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 and the emotion in the music was superlative. There were monumental swells of music that filled the hall and beyond, bringing tears to my eyes, and delicate notes that were sometimes lacy, sometimes whimsical, sometimes contemplative - just gorgeous."

Board-Staff Well, here we are starting our 2011/2012 Concert Season!
After a plea by Travis for volunteers, and with Steve [Wells] committed to playing for the Philharmonia, I volunteered.
I own Moore Travel Unlimited, am music director for Bethel Church, perform with "Saints Alive", our praise team, and am a professional singer.
I play percussion with North Star Community Band, have performed in community theatre and Paradise Playhouse Dinner Theatre, and for two years, I was president of the Optimist Club of Liberty. I have worked in fund raising and know how important it is.
This information is to let you know that I understand commitment, the importance of fund raising, how vital teamwork is, and most of all, your love of music.
We face challenges in funding this next season. Please Invite someone to sponsor your chair or give whatever they can, check with your place of employment to see if they have a gift matching program.
Together, with our joint commitment to a successful concert season, we will attain our goal!
Thank you,

Our Conductor
Travis Jürgens has performed in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Musicians who have played under his baton have commented on his exceptional talent, dynamic musicianship, imagination, and strong leadership. He earned his Bachelors
in Piano Performance with High Distinction from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and his Masters in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Illinois. Additionally, he studied at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien and the Institut für Europäishe Studien in Vienna, Austria. He also made his Viennese debut as guest conductor of the IES Vienna Chamber Orchestra.
"It is truly a joy and pleasure to create beautiful music with the talented musicians in The Philharmonia!"
~ Travis Jürgens
Mr. Jürgens' teachers have applauded him for his expressive conducting technique, thorough preparation, and omnipresent passion for music. He has served as Graduate Assistant Conductor and General Manager of the University of Illinois Philharmonia Orchestra, and as a cover conductor for the University of Illinois Orchestras. He was also the Assistant Conductor for the University of Illinois Opera Theater production of Hansel and Gretel by Neely Bruce. While in Illinois, he founded the United Orchestra of Urbana.
Many conductors have commented on Jürgens tremendous energy on the podium. His primary conducting teachers include Donald Schleicher and David Effron. Additionally, he has received instruction from Michael Tilson Thomas, Marin Alsop, Gustav Meier, Larry Rachleff, Steven Byess, Lawrence Golan, and many others. As an advocate of new music, he has performed many world premieres by several emerging composers.
In 2011, Jürgens received 2nd place from The American Prize in Orchestral Conducting and was selected by Biltmore Who's Who to represent the music industry as a lifetime honored member. In addition to his Music Director position with the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City, he is the Associate Conductor of the Lamont Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre in Denver.
"...The new young conductor is so energetic that he seems to reverberate the music! ( I think he actually left the ground once!) It was absolutely phenomenal to sense the electricity from this dynamic conductor! His full-rounded repertoire of electric communication with the musicians and the breath-taking music caught me up spellbound and left me wanting more. If you're in the Kansas City area, this is a MUST-SEE!"
2010 Season Concert Goer
History
"...It seems like the conductor is very inspired, creating new and interesting concerts. His fresh ideas and energetic conducting style is really exciting and he seemed to have a vibrant relationship with the players and I could feel that through the music. I really appreciated how he addressed the audience, told the story behind the piece, and related it to our lives' now. Great venue also, very comfortable, and a great town within walking distance that has fun shops and cafes. A wonderful experience all around."
2010 Season Concert Goer
In 1987 Ted Albrecht founded The Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City as a re-organization of the existing community orchestra which was then under his direction. In the five years that followed, he led the orchestra in establishing its new identity by conducting a wide symphonic and pops repertoire and by premiering new works by local composers, Kansas City premiers of works by known composers and entire concerts featuring works by a single composer.
In addition to performing instrumental works ranging from Beethoven, Dvorak, and Tchaikovsky to Bernstein, Copeland and Gershwin, The orchestra has featuring talented soloists soprano Roberta Peters, soprano Suzanne Hillis Ackin, pianist Hyperion Knight, organist John Schaefer, cellist Ho Anthony Ahn and cellist Martin Storey.
The orchestra has been joined by The Kansas City Symphony Chorus, The Heartland Mens Chorus, The Trinity Mixed Choir of the Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral and The Kansas City Childrens Chorus.
Our Supporters As a Sponsor to the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City, I want to take this opportunity to thank you very much for your continued support.
Now, more than ever, your support is needed and appreciated! Possibly this year you might consider upgrading your giving by even one level of sponsorship.
You may be aware that both Federal and State Arts funding is being cut and even foundations and private grants are feeling the pinch of lost funds.
The Philharmonia lost 1/3 of our grant monies for the 2011/2012 season. Your continued support is vital to our success, and, any increase in your donations will be most beneficial and appreciated.
Look forward to meeting you at our next concert!

"As a musician, I've attended many performances. The Philharmonia perform difficultt works with richness and expert interpretation. The programming is creative, and the musicians probably enjoy the opportunity to play great staples of the musical canon as well as new works by living composers. As one familiar with string instruments, I appreciate the difficulty in cultivating a beautiful sound - this string section sounds wonderful. Bravo!"
